Not finding something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist

07.06.20

A favorite citation used by the marijuana lobby to promote the idea that marijuana doesn’t impair driving is one published in 2015 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (www.nhtsa.gov/behavioral-research/drug-and-alcohol-crash-risk-study).  And when the study is cited, the results are usually badly misquoted.

Los Angeles Times: “Good news (?): marijuana doesn’t increase the likelihood of car crashes.”

USA Today: “New study shows no link between marijuana use and car accidents.”

Reason: “Landmark study finds marijuana … READ MORE

Deceptive statistical analysis

07.06.20

Two articles on the effect of recreational marijuana commercialization on traffic fatalities reached opposite conclusions in the June 22nd 2020 issue of JAMA Internal Medicine.  Readers should understand the effect of study design differences before concluding that marijuana can be commercialized without an increase in traffic fatalities.

Kamer (doi:10.1001/jamainternmed.2020.1769) reported that traffic fatalities increased in both Colorado and Washington after commercializing recreational marijuana.  But Santaella-Tenorio (doi:10.1001/jamainternmed.2020.1757) found traffic fatality increased in Colorado but not in … READ MORE

Another badly flawed study

06.18.19

Jeff Brubacher from Vancouver General Hospital published “Cannabis use as a risk factor for causing motor vehicle crashes: a prospective study.”  The study has earned a great deal of press due to his finding that there was no increased risk of crash responsibility in the driver pool he studied for drivers with a blood THC level between 2 and 5 ng/ml.  There was an increased risk of crash responsibility for drivers over 5 ng/ml, but … READ MORE

Morally reprehensible Colorado legislature

03.28.19

Colorado’s House Committee on Business Affairs and Labor yesterday approved HB19-1230, a bill creating “Marijuana Hospitality Establishments” so purchasers of “legal” marijuana would have public places to consume their drug of choice.

Patrons driving home after consuming marijuana at a hospitality establishment could be impaired.  If that impairment is caused by inhaled THC, almost half of those drivers can be arrested, prosecuted and convicted of DUI.  But if their impairment was caused by THC … READ MORE

Colorado myopia

03.26.19

Colorado politician Representative Ed Perlmutter introduced H.R. 1595 to the US House of Representatives on March 7, 2019.

“The purpose of this Act is to increase public safety by expanding financial services to cannabis-related legitimate businesses and service providers and reducing the amount of cash at such businesses.”

Cloaking his aim of expanding marijuana commercialization as a “public safety” issue demonstrates the myopia infecting so many politicians today.  Promoting a popular drug may be good … READ MORE
